The Institute of Biomaterials and Biopharmaceuticals was established in November 2024. It is a platform established by the School of Food and Pharmacy, which integrates the construction of teaching and research teams, discipline construction, school enterprise cooperation, talent cultivation, and academic achievement transformation, among other characteristic disciplines such as biopharmaceuticals, synthetic biology, and materials. Our main research directions include biological tissue engineering, design and synthesis of new polymer materials, extraction of antibacterial drugs from plants, natural products and biopharmaceuticals, and research and development of dual-use resources for medicine and food. The aim is to build a multidisciplinary cross platform, gather research teams, establish a research and development base that integrates design, synthesis, processing, testing, and evaluation, cultivate high-level talents, organize and implement various major scientific research tasks, and focus on promoting engineering and industrialization, making contributions to the development of the School of Food and Drug Sciences and related industries.
The Institute of Biomaterials and Biopharmaceuticals currently has 2 senior teachers, 1 associate senior teacher, 9 PhDs, 2 foreign teachers, and 6 individuals with overseas study experience, including 1 talent from Shanghai Baiyulan Technology, 1 talent from Shanghai Pujiang, 1 academic and technological leader from Henan Province, 2 talents from Shanghai's Retention Plan, and 2 young talents from Shanghai's Morning Light Plan. In addition, members of the Institute of Biomaterials and Biopharmaceuticals have undertaken more than 100 national or provincial scientific research projects, including the National Key R&D Program, the National High tech Research and Development 863 Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. They focus on theoretical and applied research in disciplines and fields such as biomaterials and medical devices, major disease diagnosis and treatment, and synthetic biology, and have achieved many important results, winning 7 National Science and Technology Progress Awards or Shanghai Science and Technology Awards. At the same time, various equipment such as electrospinning equipment, 3D printers, scanning electron microscopes, flow cytometers, and HR-MS have been equipped in the functional area, forming a relatively complete public preparation and characterization platform, which is convenient for research teams to carry out research work.
In the future, the Institute of Biomaterials and Biopharmaceuticals will be guided by national key research and development needs and based on the characteristic disciplines of the School of Food and Drug Sciences. It will actively carry out research and application work on new functional materials, and strive to cultivate innovative teams with international advanced levels in the field of functional materials by further gathering talents and integrating resources, achieving landmark research results, and enhancing the international influence of the characteristic disciplines of the School of Food and Pharmacy.
