The Introduction to College English Teaching and Research Section

The College English Teaching and Research Section was founded in 2004, and it is mainly responsible for the College English teaching of undergraduates and junior college students in non-English majors.

At present, there are 19 full-time teachers, including 9 lecturers and 10 teaching assistants. The vast majority of the faculty are young teachers, which is a collective full of vitality and innovation ability.

All the teachers in the section actively devote themselves to the front line of teaching with the consistent style of unity, dedication and pragmatism. The teachers adopt flexible and diverse teaching methods and use scientific and advanced teaching means. It not only combines the teachers' face-to-face teaching with students' autonomous learning but also integrates the traditional teaching with multimedia teaching. It focuses on cultivating students' listening and speaking ability and language application capability. The section has implemented a collective lesson preparation system and unified teaching plans; At the same time, regular teaching seminars are held by the faculty to explore the problems in the teaching process. In addition, they actively carry out the research on the subject of teaching reform and jointly explore new models of College English teaching.

In terms of team building, in consideration of the characteristics of a majority of young teachers with limited teaching experience, we have formulated a training plan for young teachers, and invited experienced teachers to do a series of training exchanges for new teachers. Our teachers all emphasize on the basic skills and value the teaching exchange platform provided by the university. And they actively participate in various teaching competitions and achieve outstanding results. Furthermore, we regularly organize students to take part in the activities of observing teaching, exchanging the experience, studying teaching methods and learning from each other.

The section actively organizes students to participate in all kinds of College English competitions at all levels, such as the Shanghai Starlight Plan vocational college skills competition (oral English program for non-English majors), the FLTRP • Guocai Cup National English writing competition (higher vocational group), the Shanghai Division semi-finals (Non-English professional group) and the SFLEP • Vocabulary Talent Cup National College Students' English vocabulary ability competition (national final higher vocational group). Lots of students have won the awards in these competitions. Meanwhile, the section focuses on the combination of inside and outside class. It encourages students to actively organize and participate in various English extracurricular activities, which enlivens the learning atmosphere and cultivates students' interest in learning English and improves the teaching quality.

Until now, the teachers of College English Teaching and Research Section have published more than 30 papers in various journals at all levels. All teachers of the section will continue to cooperate with each other and carry out curriculum reform and innovation bravely. Moreover, they will constantly enhance teaching quality and their own scientific research ability, and cultivate more high-quality skilled talents for the university and society.
