Shuguang Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is a century-old hospital in Shanghai,it is a class 3A general hospital of traditional Chinese medicine, one of the top ten general hospitals in Shanghai and a national model traditional Chinese medicine hospital. From 1984 to 2010, it won the title of Shanghai Civilized Unit for 14 consecutive times; In 1999, it won the title of National Top 100 Hospitals by the Ministry of Health; In 2004, it won the honor of National Health System Advanced Collective for the third time; In 2005, it was rated as an advanced unit in the construction of spiritual civilization in China; It has won the title of National Hospital Culture Construction Advanced Unit for many times; In 2009, it won the Shanghai Welcome Expo Quality Service Contribution Award issued by the State Council. In 2001, it became the first Chinese medicine hospital in China to pass the ISO9001 quality management system certification. In 2010, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Ministry of Health listed Shuguang Hospital as a provincial and ministerial research hospital. 

The hospital has two departments, east and west, with 1,200 approved beds and 1,320 open beds. The west is located at No. 185 Pu'an Road, Huangpu District, adjacent to Huaihai Park, covering an area of 28 acres. The eastern part is located at No. 528, Zhangheng Road, Zhangjiang High-tech Park, Pudong, with an investment of 600 million yuan and covering an area of 160 acres, which is a garden-style hospital that integrates modern architecture and traditional characteristics. Founded in 2001, Shuguang Hospital Group currently has more than 10 member units. In 2008, it was approved as the International Exchange and Cooperation Base of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The hospital now has three key disciplines of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan of the Ministry of Education: Chinese medicine orthopedic science, Chinese medicine internal medicine, and Chinese herbal medicine (Chinese medicine preparations, Chinese medicine clinical pharmacology). There are 2 national key clinical specialties: hepatology and orthopedics. There are 11 national key specialties in the Twelfth Five-Year Plan: nephrology, endocrinology, spleen and gastroenterology, cardiovascular medicine, acupuncture, proctology, pulmonology, gynecology, intensive care medicine, nursing, and clinical pharmacy. The emergency department of traditional Chinese medicine is the emergency base of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the preparation room is the national base for traditional Chinese medicine preparations and modification

The hospital has opened more than 70 specialized specialties with their own characteristics, which are unique and well-known throughout the country. In recent years, the hospital has insisted on strengthening the construction of the connotation of traditional Chinese medicine, and has successively established departments such as Famous Medical Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Traditional Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Pre-existing Treatment Center, Shi's Injury Department, Bai's Proctology Department, Cai's Library and other departments. In order to effectively inherit the academic ideas of famous and old Chinese medicine experts, the hospital has established 5 national famous and old Chinese medicine expert inheritance studios and 12 Shanghai famous Chinese medicine studios.

The hospital has a number of intensive care units, advanced medical facilities, complete medical and surgical departments, and has strong comprehensive treatment capabilities, becoming one of the six key units of Shanghai's public health prevention and treatment system and one of the three emergency centers in Pudong. The National Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine Quality Monitoring Center of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Shanghai Quality Control Center of Traditional Chinese Medicine are also located in the hospital. In 2010, the hospital became one of the designated hospitals of the Shanghai World Expo and undertook the medical security task of the medical station in Area C of the World Expo.

The total number of employees in the hospital is more than 1800, with 102 senior professional titles and 41 doctoral supervisors. There are 11 experts enjoying the special allowance of the State Council, 33 selected personnel of the national talent training project, and more than 100 experts have served as the vice chairman or above of the national and Shanghai professional medical association. At present, it has 15 national and provincial famous Chinese medicine practitioners, 27 Shuguang famous Chinese medicine practitioners and 26 Shuguang senior Chinese medicine practitioners, and has formed the dawning characteristics of famous Chinese medicine doctors in command and senior Chinese medicine practitioners in charge in terms of giving full play to the advantages of traditional medicine.

With the goal of building a research hospital, the hospital has 4 research institutes, 14 clinical research rooms, 5 tertiary laboratories and 8 second-level and first-level laboratories of traditional Chinese medicine research. A state-level key laboratory was established - a laboratory jointly built by the province and ministry of liver and kidney disease. The phase I drug clinical trial ward with international standards has completed the first clinical trial project commissioned by the World Health Organization in China. Since 1995, it has undertaken more than 300 ministerial and national projects, including 1 national 863 project, 6 national major special projects, 6 Eleventh Five-Year Plan support projects, 2 973 sub-plans, and 60 National Natural Science Foundation projects, becoming the Chinese medicine hospital with the most major tasks in China. The hospital has won more than 160 scientific and technological achievement awards, including 74 ministerial and national scientific and technological progress awards, and 26 invention patent authorizations.

As one of the first clinical medical schools established in China and the clinical base of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine, Shuguang Clinical Medical College has 17 teaching and research departments, 7 doctoral training centers, 10 master's training programs, and 3 postdoctoral mobile stations. Every year, it undertakes the clinical teaching work of more than 800 students of all types.

With the core concept of "Great Doctor Deze and the Dawn of Life", the hospital pioneered the "ethical ward rounds" in the country and opened the country's first free TCM health hotline, forging a dawning culture with distinctive characteristics. In recent years, under the guidance of the scientific outlook on development, the implementation of the sustainable development strategy has laid a solid foundation for the realization of the strategic goal of building an Asian center of clinical medicine, teaching and research of traditional Chinese medicine.
