Good News: Three Students from Our University Won the National Prizes at the 1st “SFLEP VocabGo Cup” National English Vocabulary Contest

On 6th June, 2021, fourteen students of different majors and grades from our university took part in the 1st “SFLEP  VocabGo Cup” National English Vocabulary Contest, and three outstanding First-year students finally won the top three national prizes:

The 1st Prize: Miss Gang Jiawei (Class One, Grade One, Industrial and Commercial Enterprises Management);

The 2nd Prize: Mr. Huang Hongyu (Class One, Grade One, Rehabilitation and Nursing);

The 3rd Prize: Miss Zhang Leyao (Class One, Grade One, Food Quality and Safety).

A total of 7,590 students from different colleges and universities participated in this national English vocabulary contest. After fierce competition, Miss. Gang from Economics and Management College at our university finally stood out from other excellent contestants and won the first prize (with ranking among top 1%-4% of the total number of participants), Mr. Huang from Nursing and Health College won the second prize (with ranking among top 4%-10%), and Miss Zhang won the third prize (with ranking among top 10%-20%).

The first “SFLEP  VocabGo Cup” National English Vocabulary Contest was jointly organized by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press and China Centre for Foreign Language Textbooks and Teaching Methods, aiming at the development of students’ deep learning of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the promotion of the fine traditional Chinese culture. In addition, through the innovation of English vocabulary learning and assessment, the purpose of this contest is to deepen students’ learning of English vocabulary and promote the reform of College English teaching.

Consisting of three rounds of competition (on-campus level, provincial/municipal level, and national final), this vocabulary contest was categorized into “Undergraduate Group” and “Higher Vocational College Group”, which attracted students of colleges and universities at different levels across the whole country. The testing scope not only covered vocabulary related to ideology and politics such as Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, history of the Communist Party of China and Chinese culture, but also included vocabulary related to national English tests such as College English Test (CET) Band 4 and Band 6, as well as Practical English Test for Colleges (PRETCO) Level A and Level B. The contest was held online through the WeChat official account of VocabGo, during which all the contestants answered questions online by mobile phone.

The contest was launched in April which aroused a great number of freshmen and sophomores in our university to sign up for. 672 students took part in the on-campus qualification stage on 10th May, among whom the top 200 participants advanced to the Shanghai municipal-level competition on 27th May. Finally, 14 strong contestants from our university showed their talents and successfully qualified for the final round at nationwide.
