On April 22, invited by Shanghai Zhongqiao University, Professor Douwe Van Den Oever, a renowned sinologist from the Netherlands, visited our university to deliver an academic lecture on the theme of "Technology, Science, and the Rise of Contemporary China" for faculty and students.
Dean Yan Hui of the School of International Education warmly welcomed Prof. Douwe Van Den Oever and the people participating in the lecture. Dean Yan Hui pointed out that it was the second time for Prof. Douwe Van Den Oever came to Zhongqiao to participate in exchange events after visiting and delivering a speech at Zhongqiao last year. In addition, the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) in Germany is also one of the institutions that has established a long-term cooperative relationship with Zhongqiao. In the past year and this year, Zhongqiao University has arranged short-term/short-term exchanges for faculty and students respectively. In the coming autumn, Zhongqiao will welcome another group of German students to come to campus for a semester-long exchange program. The School of International Education encouraged and welcomed faculty and students to actively participate in international exchange and cooperation programs.
In the lecture, Prof. Douwe Van Den Oever gave a detailed explanation of technology and science. He stated, technology is the tool, method, and means created by humans to meet needs; Science, on the other hand, explores the laws of nature, society, and human thought through observation, experimentation, and reasoning. The development of technology and science plays a crucial role in the development and rise of a country.
Prof. Douwe Van Den Oever said that China has made remarkable achievements in many fields over the past decades. The world is amazed by China's rapid development and great achievements. According to Prof. Wan, behind this rapid development is the Chinese government's great attention to and strong support for scientific and technological innovation, as well as the hard work and unremitting efforts of the majority of scientific and technological workers.
During the interactive session, the teachers and students interacted with Prof. Douwe Van Den Oever on the current issues in the society. In this lecture, the teachers and students at the scene expressed that they benefited greatly from Prof. Douwe Van Den Oever's explanation, which enriched their understanding of technology and science, and also gave them a clearer understanding of the course of China's rise in science and technology and its future. At the same time, they also deeply felt the importance of scientific and technological innovation to the development and rise of the country, and expressed that they would study harder, improve their skills, cultivate innovative spirit, and contribute their strength to the scientific and technological progress and development of the country.
